MANILA ROPEDescription: This is braided rope, usually tan, in various diameters. Buying information: Years ago, manila rope was made of hemp, but today it is almost all plastic, made to simulate real manila. (Manila made of hemp is still available at marine supply stores, but is very expensive.) Still, it has real manila characteristics: it won't melt in sunlight (as nylon will), it ties and knots well, and it doesn't stretch much. How-to hints: It is most easily cut with pruning shears. To prevent the ends from unraveling, apply electrical tape over the cut line. The tape will hold the strands together at the ends when the rope is cut. In lieu of taping, you can dip the severed ends into rubber or contact cement. |
