ROPE AND CORD INTRODUCTIONThe main difference between rope and cord is size: anything 1/8 inch in diameter or smaller is cord; anything above that size is rope. Rope is more common. Both materials are sold packaged, but mostly they are available cut from reels by the foot. Rope also comes packaged for particular uses such as clothesline, winches, and tie-downs. When buying rope, pay attention to the SWL or safe working load, which means the maximum pressure, measured in weight, that should be applied to the rope when it is brand new and used in situations where failure may be injurious to life, limb, or property. ST refers to breaking strength and is the theoretical strength of the rope in noncritical situations -- no danger to life, limb, or property. Check with your dealer to make sure the rope is strong enough for your purposes. Bear in mind, however, that knots weaken a rope, perhaps by as much as 50 percent. |
