MASONRY NAILDescription: This looks like a common nail but is thicker and fluted. Buying information: It is used to secure wood or other materials to masonry. How-to hints: To drive these nails, use a 2-pound sledge hammer and wear goggles to protect eyes against flying chips -- and heads of nails that may fly off. The best procedure for safety and ease of use is to select a nail that is long enough to penetrate through the item and no more than 1 inch into the masonry. It will be difficult for the nail to penetrate more deeply than this, and once it stalls, the chances of knocking the head off are that much greater. Screws -- which work better -- are also available for masonry. |
