MACHINE SCREW
Description: Unlike the wood screw, the machine screw is threaded the entire length of its shank. Ends are flat rather than pointed, and the heads are either round or flat. The finish may be plain steel, cadmium-plated, or chrome-plated; screws may also be brass. Threads may be "coarse" or "fine" for a given diameter or gauge. The screws come in lengths from 1/2 inch to 4 inches. Buying information: Machine screws are used to assemble metal components, such as slotted metal shelving. These screws are bought by gauge and thread number. An 8x24 screw, for example, means a No.8 gauge screw with 24 threads per inch, which is one of the "coarse" series. A "fine" No.8 screw has 32 threads per inch. |
