Description: This is basically a tubular metal device with one threaded end that goes into a hole in the toilet tank and a plungerlike valve on the other end.
Buying information: You can replace a part on a faulty ball cock, but since there are hundreds of models available -- each with different parts -- and finding the part you need can be very difficult, you should buy a new ball cock -- almost all the makes will fit the same toilet. If you buy a ball cock loose, it will come with a refill tube and a float rod. You can also buy packaged kits (at much greater expense) that come with all components required to replace everything in the tank.
How-to hints: Replacing a ball cock is a relatively simple job on a two-piece toilet, and it can be eased by using plastic water supply pipe instead of metal. Plastic pipe is flexible, which allows it to be bent into position, and requires less-precise cutting than metal tubing.
