SINK PARTS INTRODUCTIONSink pipes are slightly larger in diameter than lavatory pipes. TAILPIECE, SINK PARTS
Description: This is a straight length of tubing, 1 1/2 inches in diameter and usually 8 inches long, with a rolled or collared edge. It is also available in 6-, 10-, and 12-inch lengths. Buying information: This is the part that projects straight down from the sink and is secured to the sink with a large locknut that screws to the drain strainer. How-to hints: To avoid having to cut it, buy a tailpiece as close in length as possible to the distance to be covered between the sink and the J-bend. If necessary, you can cut the brass with a hacksaw or a very large tubing cutter. The latter does a better job -- the cut edges are not ragged. Though most people don't have a tubing cutter that's large enough, many hardware and plumbing-supply stores will do it free. Plastic cuts easily with a hacksaw. |
