SWEAT FITTING, COPPER PIPE PLUMBING
Description: This is a smooth copper fitting in various shapes. It also comes in cast brass, which is lighter-colored than copper or wrought (extruded copper). Buying information: This is used for both water and waste. A more accurate name for this fitting would be "solder fitting," because hot solder is used to join the fitting to the pipe. This method of joinery is used for both water and DWV pipe. Brass is used wherever water is corrosive. How-to hints: See the section on pipe for how-to hints on joining copper pipe to fittings by sweating. Note also that cast brass is somewhat more difficult to solder than copper, because copper heats evenly, brass less so. In addition, the thickness of the fitting inhibits joinery.
