Buying information: Stems come in a tremendous array of sizes, even within brands. The best way to get the right size is to take the old one to the store with you.

Sometimes it is difficult to find the right stem, and a dealer has to order it, a time-consuming process. If so, you can obtain a spring-actuated stem, which you can secure into the faucet hole and tighten down, to cut off water flow until the proper replacement can be installed. This temporary stem has a knurled end that you can grip to turn the water on and off.
