FINISHING NAIL
Description: This is a slender nail with a small, cupped head. It comes in various lengths; most are 1 1/2 inches. Plain and galvanized types are available. Buying information: Finishing nails are designed to be used where you don't want nailheads to show. The small heads may be left flush with the surface, but usually they are countersunk; the heads are driven slightly beneath the surface and then the holes above are filled with wood putty and sanded so that the nail is completely hidden. How-to hints: When countersinking nails, use a countersink that is the same size as the head of the nail. If you are working with very expensive wood and want to lessen the risk of hitting the wood with a hammer blow, use a magnetic spinner. This tool holds the nail and actually spins it into the wood up to the point where it can be countersunk. The spinner can be used on 4d and 3d nails. |
