NAILSNails are generally available in lengths that range from 1 to 6 inches; as the nail gets longer, the diameter gets correspondingly thicker. When speaking of size, nails are commonly referred to by weight and number. Weight is expressed by the letter d, which stands for "pennyweight" (the way nails used to be sold), with sizes running from 2d (1 inch long by 1/8 inch thick) to 60d (6 inches long by 3/8 inch thick). There are many different kinds of nails available; some can serve a variety of purposes while others, such as roofing nails, are designed to do just one task. Nails are packaged in various ways, the most common being 1- and 5-pound boxes. The less packaging there is, the less you usually pay. The cheapest way to buy nails is in large quantities -- 25- and 50-pound boxes. |
