RENEWABLE FUSEDescription: This, too, looks like a standard fuse, except it has a little pushbutton at the top. Buying information: Unlike a standard fuse, where the linkage is destroyed when too much current is passed through the fuse, a renewable fuse has a heating element: when the current is too great the element separates, stopping electrical flow. Although this reset feature is convenient, some electricians say that the fuse is subject to malfunction. The interior mechanism can short itself and won't blow when overloaded. Other electricians, however, say it is fine when you want the push-pull convenience of a circuit breaker in a fuse-box panel. Renewable fuses come in the same sizes as standard plug-in fuses but cost around 50 percent more. How-to hint: Select the minimum amperage required in the situation. |
