CHAIN INTRODUCTIONA great many types of chain are available, but the chain you can buy at hardware stores should be sufficient for most of your needs. Chain is commonly sold off 100-foot reels, and you can buy the exact footage needed; the dealer will cut it to order. Chain can be divided into two groups: that which is used for decorative purposes and types whose primary function is strength. No matter what kind you buy, however, observe what is known in the trade as the working-load limit. All chain is tested for this, and it indicates the maximum amount of stress a chain can safely take under a steady pull. Load limits vary greatly, depending on the metal the chain is made of and its diameter -- the thickness of the wire. One-quarter-inch decorative brass jack chain, for example, has a working load limit of 10 pounds. But grade 30 proof coil chain has a working load limit of 1,250 pounds. Before you buy chain, make sure it is strong enough for your job. The dealer should be able to furnish you with these limits. |
