#1. HOW TO BREW A GREAT CUP OF COFFEE
Delicious java does not have to cost a lot
With cold weather and more time indoors, a good cup of coffee is essential. It is much more important to make coffee with careful measurement than to buy the most expensive beans. Before you buy costly gourmet java, master the technique of measuring.
Trick #1: The trick is to measure the water and the coffee very carefully. You need to use the same amount of coffee each time and then adjust the volume of water you use.
If the coffee tastes weak, it has too much water; if it tastes bitter, it has too little water. A small amount of water, even a tablespoon per cup, can make a big difference.
Of course you can measure the water so it's exactly the same each time and then adjust the coffee until you get it right.
Trick #2: Keep the coffee in the freezer. Take it directly out of the freezer, measure what you need, then put it back in the freezer. If you're using a drip method (which makes delicious coffee) bring water to a full boil to unfreeze the grounds immediately. If you are using a coffee maker, let the coffee sit for a minute to warm up.

Buy 8 O'clock brand coffee French Roast for $4 a lb. vs. $7 a lb. for gourmet beans. This brand used to be sold only by the A&P, but now it is sold in a variety of stores.
== Use half as much coffee
To make a pot of coffee, the Mr. Coffee machine needs half the grounds of a simple funnel drip device.
== Better tasting coffee!
The cup you drink from will change the taste of your coffee. I tested this using several cups. One cup tasted much better than any other. Look for a ceramic mug for starters, but keep trying until you find a cup that tastes best to you.
== Keep coffee fresher
Instead of cutting the coffee vacuum bag across the top as you are instructed on the package, take a pair of scissors and cut the bag on one end at a diagonal so that it has a spout. You may need to trim a little to get it to pour right. Cutting this way makes a smaller opening so the coffee stays fresher and pours easier. To close simply fold the bag several times and seal with a clothes pin. Put the bag in the refrigerator or freezer.

After ten years our Mister Coffee(r) Junior started to have problems. At Wal-Mart we looked for a new small coffee maker. One that looked promising took a triangular filter which cost $3 for a box of 200 filters vs $1 for 200 Mr. Coffee junior filters. Since we knew that I would go through roughly 400 filters (two boxes) a year for ten years, I would spend $20 on Mr. Coffee filters vs. $60 on the others, a savings of $40.
We also found that an automatic drip coffee maker,such as a Mr. Coffee(r), uses about half as much coffee as some other systems. The slow drip at an exact temperature allows you to make a good cup of coffee each time. We use the store brand Columbian coffee and our coffee is better than any I have tasted even in gourmet coffee shops.
